Rationale

Our target audience for the Beach Cleanup campaign is children. We have used the notion that trash isn’t only consumed once, and will remain in the food chain, “You dump it… You eat it”. The poster uses pathos to appeal to the viewers, and make them feel grossed out and keen to make a difference. The Cleanup Claw is a way of making picking up rubbish fun and entertaining for the kids, while also ensuring better hygiene and safety. The website is our most informative piece, although the playfulness of the hovers and style allow it to still appear child-friendly and easy to navigate. Our stylistic approach appeals to children with the use of simple shapes, bright colours, and friendly characters, which allows us to make the event seem exciting and playful for those who attend. The narrative grows across the strategy, as shown in the User Experience list below.

Before
Poster- Used to advertise the event, and directs audience to website.

Website- Part of the website is dedicated to advertising the events, as well as having sections explaining why we are running this cleanup campaign.

During
Cleanup Claw- The claw is used during the event, as a way of making kids want to participate, making the event more enjoyable and fun, rather than disgusting.

After

Flyer- The flyer is handed out after participating in the event to say Thank You. It also has a link to our website in case the participants haven’t seen the poster prior.

Website- The website has sections dedicated to organising future clean-ups, as well as a list of clean-ups to attend in the future. Our flyers and posters can also be downloaded for future use at their own events, as well as ordering our cleanup claws.

Printing

Today I went in and got it all printed from Ink Digital. I got our poster printed in A2, our 'Clean Up Claw' poster printed in A3, and the two small flyers both double-sided printed in A4, so they fold up into the A7 size.

Once picking them up from the printers, I was extremely happy with how they turned out, and definitely think they all came a long way in the final week. This project has been quite enjoyable to work on, especially in the sense that you need to make a suit of media which all relate and promote one particular event.

Flyer Development

Today, after working on the website for most of the day, I then began working on developing the flyer and creating the girl flyer. I have attached the developments below:

Above, is the most recent developments of the flyer, which is now ready for printing. The two 'thank you' spreads will be in different flyers respectively, each with their matching poster on the back. I have also attached the final flyer posters below:

Website Development

I spent most of today whipping up all of the Photoshop files for our website, and then putting it into InVision. I quite enjoyed this process, and I liked working with aspects to make user interaction a lot easier, such as using hovers to make it apparent that something is meant to be clicked. I have attached the screens from the final website below. The InVision link has also been pasted below:

https://invis.io/RU4JEVNJX

The above screens are the ones which appear once clicking on each of the tabs at the top of the page, or once navigating through the arrows. There are a few extra screens etc which are visible by clicking to expand certain pages for more information. I really like the consistency in style across the website, and our it resonates across the flyer, poster, and free-form idea too. I feel like they have all come together in the last few days and now appear as one large transmedia suite. I think the InVision prototype has come along really nicely, and seems very child-friendly, which is perfect for our target audience.

'Cleanup Claw' Poster

Today I decided to make up a poster which shows how our free-form idea works, and gives us something to present with the final hand-in to explain and demonstrate the claw in context. This will be printed in A3, and mounted on card. I have attached the poster below:

Poster Development

This afternoon, after class, I headed home and began cracking onto developing the poster. I ended up changing most of the trash and positioning of the trash coming from the fishes mouth, and playing around with scale to make it more realistic. I experimented more with the type down in the bottom right corner, adding the call to action "We Need You" and then the respective information about our upcoming event. I have attached the poster below:

I am really stoked with how this has developed. After sitting down and getting onto it today, I feel like it all fell into place and managed to work. By adding in the L&P can, it makes it more relevant to New Zealand. I added in some shading on the lips, trash, and even subtle shading on the teeth and tongue. The shadows projecting down onto the tongue from the trash also adds a nice touch. Overall, I am now extremely happy with how this has turned out, especially after thinking it has appeared a bit lacklustre over the past few weeks, with minimal development, so it was good to get such a massive step in the right direction coming up to hand-in.

Week Six, Session Two

Today was our final class of the semester, which was focused on solidifying our final production plans and get final small bits of feedback for printing. During today's class, we were trying to solve the dilemma of what type to use and where to place it. We opted for a hand-drawn font, which we then scanned in and created digitally.

Below, I have attached how our poster is looking as of the end of today's class. There is still a lot of aspects which needs developing, such as changing the background colour to a gradient, removing the opacity blurs of the rubbish, increase the type size, and also playing around with what rubbish is coming out of the fishes mouth and the scale of each piece.

As we come towards the final hand-in, I'm quite happy with how this has been developing. I know that once I make a few more changes to the poster that it will finally be at a point which I'm happy with. I will work on it later today and update the blog with the final poster. Over the next few days, I will also complete the two flyers (one with a male and one with a female), and then mock up the new website on Photoshop and InVision. I'm also looking to create a poster showing how 'Cleanup Claw' in context.

Week Six, Session One

Near the beginning of today's class we received some helpful feedback on each of our transmedia items from both Phoebe and Tristan, which meant that we had the rest of the class to work on these. We continued to work with the type on the poster, and how that is set out, as well as the overall composition and feel of the website. We felt that the website seemed a bit too mature for our target audience, rather than colourful like our latest flyer design. Tonight we are each going to continue working on these so that we can get some more feedback below.

I have attached an image of how the new website is beginning to look.. It is still under development, and we are still yet to put in the proper text. I am quite happy with the new layout, although the title needs a bit more refinement still, particularly finding a way to fill the space either side of "Beach Cleanup".

Overall I feel that we are on the right track, and everything is starting to come together now, as we continue to match up all of the aesthetics and themes across our transmedia projects.

Flyer Poster Developments

After having feedback that we should have a boy and a girl on the flyer poster, we decided to make two separate flyers, one with our girl character, and the other with the boy character. I went home and digitally created another character.

I have attached the two respective posters below. Each of these has been developed since our last critique.

I really like the look of these, and they definitely fit in with our target audience, aiming at younger children. These posters are used to congratulate the children on participating, although there is some body copy on each flyer poster warning them that the job isn't done yet, and to participate in future cleanups.

Flyer Development

Over the past few days, I have been working on developing our Flyer idea. We have decided that to make it more sutiable for handing out after the event, we would make it smaller. The fold out poster is now A4 size, rather than A2. This means that once it is folded up, it's a nice small booklet which is very child-friendly, suitable for our target audience. This has also allowed us to take a more illustrative approach and minimize the amount of text used.

I have printed out a few iterations of the flyer, which can be seen in my physical workbook. I quite like how it looks now, and I feel it is much better now that it's more of a miniature flyer/booklet.

Poster developments from the interim

After the interim and some feedback from the class, I've changed the poster some more, combining both Blake's and my own fish to create a new fish that we feel is what we've been working towards. I also played around with the typography a little bit, though we're still unhappy with that as it it is.
The background is also now an off-white/blue.

Week Five Interim Presentation

The majority of today's class was based around an interim presentation, where we got into groups of 4 pairs and went around showing all of our work for feedback. We presented a few of our poster developments, as well as our flyer, grip claw (free-form idea) and our websites. We got some good, helpful feedback on each of these and feel like we are on the right track moving forward. Some feedback we got has been written below:

General:
- Brighten some of the colours, such as blues, and alter sand colour
- Have teeth consistent across all media

Posters:
- Try combining the two styles of the fish, one looks quite scary looking while the other look super friendly
- Play around with the text placement
- Experiment with possible background colours
- Try teeth similar to flyer, website mouths etc

Flyer:
- Play around with cover
- Add in Love Your Coast logo
- Less Text
- More kid-friendly
- For flyer poster, try having the boy holding our plastic grip claw and fist pumping the air, rather than hi-fiving the fish, as in the poster the person is eating the fish rather than being friends with it.

Website:

- Play around with placement of tabs and logos
- Make a whole mouth rather than just horizontal lines (curve edges of mouth)
- Possibly add social media icons

We also played around with putting the grip claw in context in some photos, to see how it would look when people interact with it. Here is an example:

By tomorrow we are hoping to have some more developments done, so that we can get some more feedback, as it's essentially our final class before the final week of developments and printing for hand-in. Jeremy is going to sketch a new drawing for the flyer poster, and I will render it digitally, in the same style as our current flyer poster. Jeremy is going to continue working on developing the poster, while I will work on the website.

Development of our optional offering

To differentiate ourselves from the rest of the Beach Cleanup-ers in the class, we decided not to go with the idea of a trash/tote bag for our final piece. Instead (after a lot of conceptualizing) we settled on the idea of a plastic claw, which could be used to help pick up trash during the beach clean. Aesthetically and functionally it appeals to our young demographic and is a lot more fun than a bag.

Flyer Poster Development

Following class today, I decided to work on developing the flyer poster. We were wanting to have the character holding a bag of rubbish, and also holding/using our claw grip which we are making as our free-form idea. Jeremy sketched up a basic drawing of how the character would look, and then I rendered it digitally and put it onto the poster. I have attached this below:

I quite like this development, particularly because it creates more of a relationship with our free-form idea, being the plastic grip claw to pick up rubbish with. I quite like this new design, and will take a printed version to class tomorrow for some more feedback on where to next. Apart from this, I would like to continue on working on minimizing the amount of type inside of the flyer, as well as making it more childish and kid-friendly. I am also looking forward to working on the cover/back spread and making it look more polished.

Poster Development

In preparation for tomorrow's interim, I decided to work on developing the poster a bit more. One part of it which needed developing was the fish, as I had just used some basic shapes as the fish, although it needed to be altered to look more like a fish. I have attached two development ideas below:

I played around with the fish, making it look more realistic, although keeping to our intended aesthetic style and colour scheme. I also experimented with using the skin colour in the background to see how that looks. Other small changes made were to the text (what it says and it's sizing), as well as playing around with the placement of the objects coming out of the fish's mouth. Overall I am really happy with how all of our pieces are coming along, and I look forward to our interim presentation tomorrow morning where we will be able to get some more valuable feedback coming into the final production week.

Saturday 3 October 2015

Further poster development

After we met up on friday, we decided the poster still wasn't perfect and we had a lot of changes we wanted to make, starting with the fish. We both decided to play around with it on our own, and then regroup on monday to critique the ideas.

Though the fish itself is the biggest change, which I made to suit the aesthetic and style that seemed to be growing around all of our work, I also played around with our tagline, added some detail to the trash going into the mouth, as well as adding some more of it.

Website Development

Today I have been working on developing my website concept into a more refined design. I have taken the mouth idea and merged it with my other concept I had originally come up with, which consisted of using arrows to move horizontally through different pages. I have included JPEG images of each page below:

Overall, I am really happy with how this is coming along. I have also been using the "Hover" effect in several areas. For example, the arrows pointing to the next page increase in size when hovered over, while the text on the tabs such as "Home", "About" etc. turn bold as you hover over them. The small rectangular shape saying "Learn More" also increases in size, as does the "Love Your Coast" logo. This is a way of indicating that they are clickable, rather than relying on the change of mouse cursor to indicate so. I have also been playing around with the "More info" pages, which appear once the learn more tab has been clicked. An example of this has been attached below. The screen increases in size (vertically) to accommodate for the increase in information, while the image in the background lowers opacity and fades into a grey shade, in order to increase the readability of the foreground text.

The link to trial this InVision file has been shared below:

https://invis.io/324F3WZ5V

By Monday, I will continue to work on developing this so that it is nice and ready for our interim presentation. Next week, once I begin refining the website, I will then replace the Lorem Ipsum with proper text. I really feel like our suite of different media, such as the website, flyer, poster and optional piece is coming along really nicely. The aesthetic style seems to flow across all of them nicely and they definitely help with the User Experience.

Digital Development

Today Jeremy and I met up so that we could see where each other was at with our independent developments, and continue working on our assignment together. We spent about 2 hours working on it, and managed to come up with quite a few solid developments.

Before we met up, I had whipped up the inside layout of the flyer, which we were doing a booklet/poster fold-out styled flyer. I have attached each spread below. We are wanting to have the flyer handed out after the event to say thank you. It is a way of praising and acknowledging the participants effort, and encouraging them to continue to clean the beach in the future, and ways that they can do this. As a way of targeting families, we have made the fold-out poster idea so that it's a poster that a kid would like to stick up on his wall. The poster has also been attached below:

I also printed each of these spreads out today, and made a rough mock-up of the flyer, which we will present during Monday's interim presentation. I am looking forward to getting feedback on our idea, as well as ways to improve and develop our ideas. Over the weekend I will continue to work on creating the website and putting it into InVision.

Website development

Further development on the idea of our website. Set in the mouth that is a running motif across all of our media touchpoints, you can click left and right for new pages, instead of scrolling for more information, this keeps the website fresh, and adds and interesting dynamic with the mouth as a constant. Blake and I want to explore this idea further.
